New year, new Starbucks promotions! Everyone’s favorite coffee chain is making it easier to learn better diet habits in 2021 by encouraging its customers to embrace its “Meatless Mondays” every week this January. For the next three weeks, you can save $2 on a few of the chain’s signature vegetarian breakfast offerings — including the newer Impossible Breakfast Sandwich, which has intrigued diners who had yet to try faux meat since its release in summer 2020.
Cutting out meat — even if only once a week, especially if it’s processed or particularly fatty — can do wonders for your health, not to mention implications for the environment if more Americans cut back on their meat consumption. And while all of the sandwiches in Starbucks’ new promotion are indeed tasty, not all are as friendly to a diet (flexitarian or otherwise!) in the new year. But there’s one offering in particular that manages to pack in more than 40% of the protein you need to eat each day and a significant punch of fiber, too, all while clocking in at under 300 calories.
Starbucks’ Spinach, Feta & Egg White Wrap is among the chain’s healthiest breakfasts to order, as it’s loaded with 20g of filling protein that’ll power you through any morning routine. The best part? During this special promotion, the savory hot wrap can be snatched up for just $2 (a true steal!).
At face value, you’ll be impressed that Starbucks’ hearty breakfast egg wrap manages to stay at 290 calories while doubling down on cheesy eggs. But the vegetables tucked into this whole wheat wrap, including spinach and tomatoes, manage to squeeze in 3g of fiber, a lovely perk to consider as many Americans don’t eat enough dietary fiber found in healthy foods naturally.
Peeking at its full nutritionals, you may be dismayed to see that Starbucks’ spinach and egg wrap does contain 840mg of sodium. Stefani Sassos, MS, RD, CDN, a registered dietitian within the Good Housekeeping Institute, says that you should always try to watch your sodium intake throughout the day — but maintains that this wrap is indeed a better choice compared to the chain’s Impossible sandwich. The faux sausage sandwich lacks any vegetables, contains triple the amount of cholesterol, double the saturated fat, and 150 plus calories, only offering a 1g protein boost. And Starbucks’ other wrap, the Southwest Veggie Wrap, packs in nearly 600 calories and 1,340mg of sodium.
Making a habit of eating a vegetarian breakfast each Monday this month (for just $2!) could make it easier for you to embrace veggie-packed meals for the rest of the year. It’s a healthy way to have your Starbucks and eat it, too — a great compromise for any New Year’s diet resolution if you ask us!
